Does anyone know who earned the Distinguished Service Medal? I would like to be able to find the actual write-up that dad said was read at the Division Medal Award Ceremony. My dad, Harold Weisenburger (Sgt., 736th Tank Bat. attached to the 83rd), witnessed and wrote up this most heroic event that he had encountered. It was in the woods, the BAR man (Hispanic from New Mexico, we believe) kept the Germans pinned down. Dad wrote him up for the Distinguished Service medal. I see from other postings that it did exist. We would like to have a copy of the report for dad's "story" that I'm writing up. Thanks for any leads and we would be happy to share dad's point of view of this extreme heroism with the unit and the family. Please contact Ellen Barnhill at vebarnhill@home.com Posted 5 Nov 00

I am seeking information concerning Miles Zdenek, KIA 7 Jan 45 , Belgium. Miles was in the 83rd Infantry Division, 330th Regiment, Company L. As boys, Miles and I were Chicago neighbors; we lived and played on the same West Side Street. My war-time tour of duty was with the 5th Armored Division. During the month of December 1944, our Division spent 22 bewildering days in the inhospitable Hurtgen Forest. It was always a welcome sight to see your 83rd Division soldiers there; it somewhat alleviated the feeling of loneliness. At that point in history, I was not aware that my boyhood friend was a member of the 83rd Division. More than a half-century has flown by since those hectic days, and through those years I often wondered how close I came to meeting Miles Zdenek in the Hurtgen Forest. Thank you much! -- T/5 Frank Koss, 5th Armored Division, Company "A", 22nd Engineer Battalion and Headquarters Company CC "A". jkay11215@mac.com Posted 16 Aug 00

I never had the pleasure of meeting him, and he passed away about 10 years ago. I would like to hear from anyone who remembers my grandfather and could tell me more about him. I own a U.S. M-1 helmet with the unit insignia of the 83rd Infantry Division. On the outside is printed "Ardennes 5 January 1945". On the inside is the inscription: "Pfc. Miller 329th Reg." The crest of the helmet is bullet pierced, probably by a German 8mm round. It appears the bullet contoured the interface between the helmet and the liner, leaving the owner largely unscathed. I am very curious if anyone in the 329th might know of a Private Miller and may have more history to help me document this rare and unusual helmet. For those seeking medal replacements, it appears that there has been a change in the procedure to used to verify entitlement. Previous reports indicated that it took as long as two years to get replacement medals. It looks like the new process cuts the time considerably. (In my case, about seven months to get the entitlement notification, and another four months maximum to issue the medals.) Also, anyone who was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge or Combat Medical Badge qualifies for the Bronze Star Medal. I have been told that this is a fairly recent decision.
