Seeking any information about my uncle, 1st Lt. Tom R. Stidham, 331 IR, 1st Bn Staff, S-4. Was with the 331st from June 1944 until the finish. He is buried in the New Albany National Cemetery, New Albany, Indiana. Also seeking information about his adopted daughter, Marlene Trent Stidham. Would appreciate it if you would share any information about Uncle Tom. He was proud that he was a member of the 83rd and the 331 IR. E-mail: wmstidham@adni.net Posted 26 Dec 01

My grandfather, Malcolm J. Burton of Spindale NC, was a staff sergeant in the 330th Infantry, 83rd Infantry Division of the US Army during WWII. He was wounded in action, and he died in a hospital in Solars, France, Dec. 16, 1944. I am looking for a Veteran who might have known my grandfather during the war. Many thanks, Tim Hartis at thartis@heraldonline.com Posted 23 Dec 01

I am looking for any information about my grandfather, Walter L. Bowie, who served in the 83rd Division, 331st Infantry, Company H. He was in the service from 17 August 1943 to 3 October 1945. I know that he was awarded the Bronze Star in 1945, but little else because he didn't talk about the war. I would love to hear from anyone who served in that Company, or who remembers anything about him. Please contact me at pricefamily24@netzero.net. Thank you very much, Michelle Price Posted 06 Dec 01

Hi, my husband, Lester L. Wright, "Les" was Sgt. Lester L. Wright (S/N 33 722 147 ) Company K, 331st Infantry. He was a replacement as of Jan.15, 45 to Company K, 331. His papers read Squad Leader 745. He was wounded for the last time on April 12, 1945 by a sniper in a tree. Before that, on the same day, he had eliminated a machine gun nest that was holding up the advance by crawling up behind them and using grenades to wipe them out. I have heard that it was two groups (nests) he had to stop so they could advance. He was shot later that day and taken by stretcher to a jeep, then the stretcher placed on the jeep back to a field hospital, then to a hospital in France. His Lieutenant recommended him for the Silver Star. He speaks of being holed up in a railway station in Hamm, Germany, I think on Palm Sunday or Easter and they had to hold the station until they got help. I think they held it for 24 hours or more before help arrived. We went back to Germany to trace where he had fought and that was just the only place he could really remember because of so many changes. Does anyone else have memories that match Les'? Would you write Les at his email address: LLWathome@AOL.com Thank you, Freda Wright. Posted 04 Dec 01

I was wondering if someone could tell me when the next reunion of the 83rd/329Infantry is. I would like to go and see if anyone remembers Walter Tewell. Also, does anyone have any photos of the 83rd/329Infantry they would like to share? I am working on the Tewell Family Genealogy and my Great Uncle Walter Tewell was in this unit, and all of his records were burned in the 1973 fire at the National Archives. He never talked about the war and his son John Tewell would also like to know more about his service in World War II. I feel that his Duty to this Country should not be lost or forgotten. He was awarded two bronze stars and one or more purple hearts. His family does not know exactly about all of the metals because when he was fixing up the upstairs of his house, he put all of his metals in a cigar box and put them behind the dry wall. Walter was born and died in Columbus, Ohio, and worked for Rockwell International as a Machinist. Thanks Kevin Tewell, ktewell@hotmail.com Posted 28 Nov 01

My father served as a Master Sergeant in the 83rd. I don't know his regiment. His name was Charles F. McElwee. If you have any information, please contact me at CMcElwee@PostSchell.com Posted 26 Nov 01

Today I received the Individual Deceased Personnel File for my cousin Walter Lakeman, KIA 10 Jan 1945 near Ottre, Belgium. The file added little except he died of M.W. chest (Morter Wound?) and Capt Robert J. Lavoie, Co. C, 308th Med Bn signed the inventory of his effects which only included a bloodstained wallet, a pair of wooden shoes, a souvenir spoon and a $1.16 worth of Belgian coins. Does anyone have any knowledge of Capt. Robert Lavoie? There are 136 Robert Lavoie listings in the U.S. white pages. (Co C, 308th Med served with the 331 Inf Reg.) I'm looking for information about PFC Arthur Edwards. He was my grandmother's brother, and was killed in WW2. I think he was in the 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Division. This conflicts with information my father once told me. According to him, he was in an armored unit and was at a rest camp when the Battle of the Bulge started. He said that he was given a rifle and put into action and killed in the Argonne. I've searched the American Battle Monuments website of WW2 deaths, and the only Arthur Edwards from Pennsylvania was in the 331st Regiment, 83rd Division. I don't know anything else about his service record. I'm having trouble locating information about him because most of his and my relatives are dead now. He was originally from Pittsburgh, PA. Sincerely, W. Scott MacDonald, Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army. trombatromba@yahoo.com Posted 12 Nov 01

Bob Parsons (Sarge), F Company/331st IR, has a new email address and can be reached at Sargebobp83@aol.com. (His old email address is no longer active.) Sarge has been an invaluable source of information for the descendents of 83rd Division veterans, and without his considerable help this website would not exist. Sarge's book "Remembrances" recounts his experiences with the 83rd. If you would like a copy, you can contact Sarge at his new address. Posted 10 Nov 01

My father was in F Company, 331st from 1942-45, I'm trying to get some type of history on his and the units trek thru Europe. My father's name is Charles J. Heckler. The Saint Malo Museum has been offered a US helmet by someone who found it on the battlefield and used it to protect himself, after the previous owner had been taken away by stretcher bearers. He has kept it since 1944 as a souvenir. It appears this helmet belonged to Leo J. Brady (330th Inf. Regt), S/N 36648819, killed during the battle (6 August 44) and buried in Saint James Cemetery. Much information has been obtained through the cemetery administration, except for a picture, and the museum is desperately searching for a photograph to display. Does anyone know anything more about it? My husband, Chester B. Dukeman, was in 331st, Co A. We never see anyone else from that group. Now I am writing a book, not about the battle itself, but about the men who fought there and their wives, widows, and children whose lives were changed forever as a result of it. I am looking for stories from and about the men, from themselves and their families. This is a book that needs to be written, that must be written. The sacrifices and pain of everyone involved must be recognised and validated. I am a retired journalist and editor and I promise the book will be well, and sensitively written. Contributions can carry names or be published anonymously. If you have stories you would like to share, or know someone who has, please contact me at paddas@hotmail.com. My dad, Pfc Otto Charles Phillips, was in WWII from 1942 - 1945. He was in "C" Company, 331St Inf., 83rd Div. He was decorated with the Bronze Star. He was involved in (5) major battles. He would not talk about his time in the service much and destroyed most of his things when I was a kid. Up until now all I knew about him "I was just a truck driver". That was probably a lie since we all know they don't give Bronze Stars to truck drivers. One thing that always made him mad was near the end he was reassigned to a tank outfit under Gen. Geo. Patton and was discharged out of the tank outfit instead of the 331st Infantry. He believes the man citing him was killed before he was able to do so. Now my grandfather is pursuing the Medal, that he deserves. If you know anyone who may have served with him, contact me at wilbanr@clemson.edu. Thank you. Posted 9 Mar 01

Jean-Paul Pitou, Preuilly, France, is researching the history of the 83rd Division Campaign at Sainteny, France. Jean-Paul has talked with many Sainteny residents, and reports that all were evacuated before 4 July 1944, with the exception of Rosalie Deslandes, Valerie Mouchel, and their maid Marie Mayeux. They were found hiding in Les Landes, just south of Sainteny. Marie Mayeux was held by American Forces on charges of espionage, and was released after two days of interrogation. If any 83rd veteran remembers this incident, please contact me at davecurry@ncweb.com so that I can pass any information that you may have along to Jean-Paul. Thanks, Dave Curry. Posted 20 Feb 01

My Dad, 1st Lt. Lawrence E. Zeleznik, died in October 1999 and never would give us much information about his experiences in combat. I finally prevailed upon him to write his story and although it is very limited I do believe he was in the 331st Infantry Regiment and was in command of a machine gun platoon in a heavy weapons company --either in Company D 1st Battalion, Company H 2nd Battalion, or Company M 3rd Battalion. According to an after-action report sent to me by Sgt. Parsons the 3rd Battalion remained in Gey on December 14, 1944. At that time my Dad was engaged in an active attack and was knocked senseless by an exploding mortar shell. He was sent back to England, then to Percy Jones Hospital in Michigan. I believe he was a replacement officer because he landed at Omaha beach two days after D-day. He was wounded in France on July 19, sent back to England, and the returned to the continent " catching up with his unit near the town of Grevenmacher." If anyone has any information about him or might have known my Dad I would love to learn more. Thanks. Lzeleznik@aol.com Posted 20 Feb 01

Fred Pearson, 453rd AAA, reports that a Certificate of Appreciation is being awarded by the French Government to all LIVING veterans that participated in the Liberation of France from June 6, 1944 through May 8, 1945. This is not the Normandy Medal that has been given out in the past, but is strictly a certificate.
