My dad was in Co. F, 329th Infantry Regiment during the Battle of the Bulge. He held the rank of SGT. He was wounded and eventually returned stateside. He was awarded the Bronze Star. This is an answer to a couple of entry questions on this site dealing with the 268th FA [attached to the 83rd Division]. I spoke with my father Cpl. Eugene McCasland as I call him every Veteran's Day. He has had a couple of strokes and has walked on a wooden leg since January 1945, but he still has a memory. I am sharing this with the group because it is very interesting and shows the struggle and sacrifices they made. To the nephew of Capt. Herbert Braucher: Your Uncle was wounded by a shell from an 88mm gun with three others on December 25th, 44 near Echweiler, Germany. He and the others were given frozen blood, and because of this they died. My father said that, "They died for no reason." He knew him well. (Sorry for the sad story.) To Denver Parr: My dad knew him but that's all I could get over the phone. I'll try again. Sorry.

I guess I'm one of the last vets alive that was in the 83rd as a replacement in June of the early days in the hedge rows...as a young lad of 18 years of age, I thought it was exciting until you come to the realization that they are really trying to kill, but my luck held out....We got to the Hurtgen forest near Gey then the growing up began. I don't know how many of us are around but I don't think there are many, I'll be eighty on April 4th. I was communication chief before my 19th birthday because of being lucky and not a big target. My father, Eugene McCasland, was a Corporal in the 268th Field Artillery Battalion, Battery C. [Webmaster note: The 268th Field Artillery (8-in. guns) was attached to the 83rd Division from Aug. 30, 1944 through Sept. 11, 1944.] I noticed a couple of entries referring to this outfit. I am interested in any information on this group. My father is still alive, but still after all these years it is hard for him to discuss the war. I do have a picture taken at Camp Shelby, MS in 1943. On the uniforms is the Third Army patch which they belonged to before going over to the First Army. My father stepped on a land mine near Monshau, Germany in January, 1945. He was a lineman at the time. Should anyone have information on this outfit plese let me know. My dad, Morris Moen, then of Toledo, Ohio, served as a radio operator in the 83rd Division from January 1945 until the end of the war. He was in the 330th Regiment, First Battalion, HQ Company. He first joined the division in Bihain Belgium. He has been living in Seattle for the last 50 years or so. He and I will be traveling to Belgium and Germany to retrace his steps from 1945. We have been using his copy of Thunderbolt Across Europe to help plan our route. I was hoping to find anyone who remembers my dad or was in the same unit in order to help paint a clearer picture of those days. I recently picked up some war souvenirs for my dad Jim Walden and I got to thinking that since he is 82 years old I would try and find some WWll friends that he served with. He was in the 83rd Division, 329th Infantry from the beginning to the end across Europe, and he was on an artillery gun. He stated that out of 33 members of his platoon he was one of three original members at the end of the war. He said about three hundred soldiers served in that platoon. Rolan Steve Johnson of the 83rd Thunderbolt Division died May of 1997. He was my Dad and told me some funny stories but some very sad ones also. He and my Mom attended two of the World War II reunions on the East coast in later years. I would like to hear more about the wine cellars of France, the fox holes in Germany, or anything about this Division. If anyone remembers him, please email me. One note, my Dad had a thin memory book in which he recognized one of the officers of his division. Thanks, Kathy Fitzpatrick at fffitz@worldnet.att.net. Posted 08 July 04

I am writing concerning my great-uncle Sgt. Kenneth Cameron Collier. Our family has always thought that he fought in the 82nd Airborne; in fact, that is noted on his headstone in the Wichita Park Cemetery. However, as family historian, I could never find him in any of the information about that unit. Imagine my surprise when I received a bundle of papers from my mother's cousin, and in them were several letters from Kenneth in England prior to D-Day. And on the envelopes was his unit -- the 83rd Division, not the 82nd! I immediately went online and found his name listed in the 83rd's Roll of the Dead. I have since determined that he served with C Company, 330th Infantry. Kenneth died on July 4, 1944--I assume on the first day of the big push back by the Germans at Carentan, but I do not have any further information. I wrote for his death records, but they contain only the contents of his person upon death and the requests to transfer his remains. I know that he began as a Private and was a Sergeant when he died. I have several medals awarded to him: the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. There is also a Silver Star mentioned in his newspaper obituary, but the Army said they needed a copy of an order for it before it could be sent. If anyone remembers my great-uncle please contact me at babsdelhotal@swbell.net. Thanks for any help, Barbara Delhotal. Posted 08 July 04

I am documenting the experiences of my father, Wallace Duke, during World War II. He was a transportation corporal in a machine gun platoon (or section?) in a Heavy Weapons Company (Company M, 331st Infantry, 83rd ID). In writing his story, I would like to learn more details of exactly how his heavy weapons company was organized and it's specific role relative to the rifle companies within a battalion. More specifically, I would like to know how he, as a transportation corporal, fit into this organization and what his specific duties were, what weapons he carried, etc. I know he drove a jeep and was a squad leader, but know very little more than that. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star in fighting from Normandy to the Elbe in 1944 and 1945. He died over 30 years ago and never talked much about the war. I would appreciate hearing from anyone out there (especially any WWII veteran who was in a heavy weapons company) who could provide any of these details or could tell me where to look to find more information on the organization and role of a heavy weapons company during WWII. sonnyduke@msn.com. Second Lieutenant Donald Ridenour, ASN O2005503, 330th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, was the son of my "adopted" Grandmother (of Lansing Michigan) Is there is anyone who can let me know about him? Who served with him? Was with him when he was killed on March 2, 1945? I know he is buried at Margraten and have visited his grave on several occasions as his is one of the four graves our family has adopted. Here is a portion of a letter my mom wrote several years ago when attending a reunion of the 30th Infantry Division (of which she is an honorary member!) who liberated her home town:

My name is Mary Worrall, a native of Maastricht, Holland, and since 1947 living in Lansing, Michigan. Don's parents sponsored my visit (to the USA) in 1947, and tried in vain to find somebody who was with him in the army from 1944-1945.
I would like to thank all of the veterans for all you did to give us back our freedom. The people of the southern part of Holland, including myself, will never forget you. Especially not the young, brave war heroes, who gave their lives for us and are buried at Margraten Cemetery. The local people, old and young, have "adopted" each of the 8203 graves, my family included. We visit these graves on Memorial Day and other special days to place flowers. Our war heroes will never be forgotten! LIBERATORS! God bless you and my very best wishes to you and yours. Mrs. Mary Worrall

Mom had contacted Pat DiGiammerino from the 83rd and she also phoned a few veterans from the 330th roster she had received, but was unable to find a fellow soldier who had served with Don. If anyone can help with any information about Lt. Ridenour, please contact me at steepletowncafe@msn.com. Thanks, Linda Gisel. Posted 14 June 04

My father, 1st Lt. Percy Haron, served in the 330th Infantry Regiment in the 83rd and was awarded a Bronze Star because of communication officer activities in the Hurtgen Forest. He passed away in 1986 and when my mother passed away last year I discovered all of his service records. Coincidentally, my daughter spent 3 weeks in St. Malo, France in 1997 at a summer course from the University of Michigan, but we did not have any idea he was there 60 years ago. Perhaps someone knew him back then and can communicate with us. He had trained at Fort Benning and Camp McCoy (receiving 14 days leave on December 11, 1943, about 9 months (after a train ride to Detroit) before my birth on September 24, 1944. I am his youngest daughter, Ellen. My Dad passed away when I was a teen and I am interested in hearing more about his tour of duty in WWII. I know he has a Silver Star and a Bronze Star and that he was in a medical unit. When I was very young we visited some of his war "buddies" in the Northeast (N. I am starting some research on my father, Pfc. Harold Sheriff. I remember as a kid my father speaking of the second wave of infantry in Normandy in the "Thunderbolt Division". He didn't speak much of it when he returned and has since passed 10 years ago from a stroke after being paralyzed with no speech for the nine years before that. He was very quiet about his war days with me but I distinctly remember doing a report as a young kid on the Thunderbolt Division and remember him telling me he was the second wave to hit the beachhead. Where should I start looking for his fellow soldiers if any are still with us and how I may find by any stretch of luck someone who may have remebered the same day, occurance or even possibly him? Any response would be greatly appreciated. The new memorial in DC really stirred something in me and I think it's wonderful to finally remember our heroes of the era. Hello to all. I am writing for my grandfather, LD (Lloyd) Wallace, who was in the 83rd Division/331st Infantry. Does anyone out there remember him from WWII? I can get more information from him tomorrow in regards to his company, unit, etc. We were at the WWII Memorial Dedication this weekend in DC, and really want to help him find his buddies from the war. I did meet someone from the 330th who mentioned the yearly reunions the 83rd has. I would love to get my grandfather there. So, if anyone out there remembers LD Wallace (his nickname was Tex) from the beautiful state of Texas, please reply. I would love to surprise him with some contacts. Thank you. To all of you veterans out there, from my heart, thank you. That you were willing to make such sacrifices for the freedom of this nation, and the freedom of those persecuted by Hitler, you hold a high place of honor in my heart. I respect and admire you. I'm seeking information anyone may have about my father's tour between Sept. 11, 1944 and April 6, 1946. His name is Anthony P. Chouest. He was a Tech 5, sharp shooter, light machine gunner, and a cook (after the surrender) with the Thunderbolt 329th Infantry, Co. F. He served under Capt. Brice, who was killed at headquarters when a German jet dropped a bomb on the headquarters. My father was on guard duty at this time and was injured with shrapnel and resulting in a permanent hearing problem. He received wounds from very small pieces of rocks and metal which he said felt like being stung from a small shotgun shot from far away. He was very lucky requiring only bandaids to cover his wounds. Men in his company always wanted to go with him on leave while in Belgium and France since he could speak French. He was born in Larose, La. and was from Houma, La. which gave him a strong Cajun French heritage. He died April 18, 2002. He was a great father and a fine man. His widow and four daughters are interested in any information someone might give about our father. His serial number was 35739715. He was from the state of West Virgina when in the service, later moving to Louisville, Ohio. My father died four years ago in February and we are planning to go to the dedication of the WWII Memorial on May 29, 2004 in Washington. My mother was able to give a name of Roy Ridgeway of Louisville, Ohio. Hopefully he will see this and contact me. To all of you gentlemen who served in WWII, living and deceased, my family greatly appreciated all you did for us. I hope to hear from some of you. Sincerely, Donna Sterling Atwell at d1012a@aol.com Posted 05 Apr 04

My brother-in-law's uncle was Sgt. Horace Lanious of the 330th Infantry Regiment of the 83th Division. He was killed in action on December 24, 1944 in the Hurtgen Forest, and is buried at Margraten Cemetery. He was acting as a platoon sergeant at the time of his death. [Webmaster note: The 330th IR was in Winden, Gemany on 24 Dec. 1944 and was involved in heavy fighting at a bridge crossing and a factory.] I would like to find anyone who knew Horace Lanious, could tell me some more about him as well as the circumstances surrounding his death. Thanks, Tom Sorkness at Tjsorkness@aol.com Posted 04 Apr 04

My uncle, Charlie Allen White served with the 83rd, 331st, Company C. He was carried as AWOL from August 8th, 1944, 3 miles from St. Malo until 1951 when it was changed to MIA, in part due to statements made by Cyrus D. Coon of Michigan. How could I find out more about my uncle and the last man to see him Cyrus Coon? My wife and I are going to be in Normandy this summer for the D-Day events. We wanted to try to locate the last known point of my uncle, thinking since the government had released the information about him finally, after years of trying, he would be awarded his Bronze Star and Purple Heart. We wanted to leave them for him at the wall in Brittany Cemetery that has his name listed as MIA. Apparently they do not want to award him or his family the medals he earned. All the reports the Government has released do not add up. He was 19 years old and from a farm in the mountains of Tennessee. He knew what liquor was and probably knew how to make it, but to say he went AWOL specifically to get cognac is absurd to me. I would like to hear from anyone who might be able to help me find more information. Thanks, Michael White at michael.white@lowndes.k12.ga.us Posted 23 Mar 04

He entered service in December 1943, received infantry training at Camp Fannin, TX, went to Europe in June 1944 and received a Silver Star for actions in Germany on Dec 22, 23, and 24, 1944. He also received a Purple Heart for taking a bullet to the stomach. Any info would be appreciated. Please contact me at Archer10240525@aol.com Posted 18 Mar 04

On August 10, 1944 the 908th Field Artillery set up its 105mm howitzers at La Marchandais, a small farm about 10 km south of St. Malo and Dinard. There they fired directly into the fortifications at St. Malo. Fierce German counter-battery fire tore into the 908th, killing Lt. Col. Paul Thompson and three others. Click here to learn more. The documentary that features interviews with several 83rd Division veterans will air on public television stations across the United States beginning in May 2004. "Thank You, Eddie Hart," focuses on one soldier--PFC Eddie Hart, 329th IR, Co. G, who was killed in Barby, Germany on April 12, 1945, the day before the 83rd Division established the first permanent bridgehead across the Elbe River. But it is the story of many WWII soldiers and their families. Five 83rd Division vets are interviewed, and many others contributed information and photographs for the film. There is a web site, http://www.thankyoueddiehart.com, where you can go for more information. VHS tapes and DVDs are also available for sale. The DVD version includes extra scenes showing the family's visit to a farm near Eckelrade where some 329th IR soldiers stayed.

The individual public television stations across the country will choose various dates and times to air "Thank You, Eddie Hart," so be sure to check your local listings or call your local public television stations for the specific date(s) and time(s) the documentary will be shown on your local stations. Also, some stations have not yet committed to airing it so please contact your local station and request the program. It is anticipated that many stations will show it near Memorial Day Weekend to coincide with other Memorial Day programming. If you need information on which stations are in your area, email Debbie Holloman, Eddie's niece, at daholloman@hotmail.com Posted 16 Mar 04

My dad, Pfc. Gilberto Torres, of Brady and Melvin Texas, served in Company B, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded in the Battle of St. Malo in Aug 1944 by machine-gun fire while advancing across a field . Gilberto is almost 80. I am sure he would like to hear from anybody in Company B. If any veteran from Company B remembers him (or even if he does not), please contact me and I will put you in touch with Gilberto Torres. My name is Jean Paul Pitou. I am in charge of organizing the Exhibit that will be held in Sainteny this year in commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation of Normandy. I have been working on and researching the battle that liberated the town of Sainteny for many (8) years. Thanks to Dave Curry particularly, I have collected much information about the role of the 83rd Infantry Division. From my side, I have collected the remembrances of many inhabitants of the town of Sainteny who lived through World War II. The Mayor of Sainteny and the local committee want to commemorate the liberation, as all of Normandy is doing. At this point in time, we don't know if we will have the honor and pleasure of receiving Veterans of the 83rd Infantry Division. We would like very much for as many Veterans as possible to come to this celebration. If you intend to come, please don't wait to make contact with Dave (davecurry@ncweb.com) or me at pitoujp72@aol.com. Warm regards, Jean Paul. Posted 10 Mar 04

We are trying to find Benjamin (Ben ) Schulman (or Schulmann) who served with the 83rd Division and rescued Holocaust survivors from a barn in Germany. The survivors had escaped from the Paking Concentration Camp . Ben was accompanied by Emmanuel Massing. One of our class speakers, Robert Mendler, was one of the survivors. We were able to locate Massing in Baltimore and reunited him with Bob after fifty years. We can't locate Schulman. Sorry. No other information. Schulman was from Newark. Is it possible to put this request on your site? Maybe somebody remembers, or knows something.

I am the daughter of Private MacKenzie William Craig, Sr. (35 758 723). He was a member of Company C, 331st Infantry, 83rd Division. Following the death of my mother, I found a letter that had been written to her on 21 July 1945 that indicated they "attacked enemy troops near La Varde, France, 3 miles south of Sainteny, on 20 July 1944." The letter further stated that when reorganization of the company took place my father could not be found. In April of 1946 my mother received my father's wallet and a letter advising her that it was being sent to her. She was later notified that my father was buried in Plot U, Row 4, Grave 76, USMC, Blosville, France. I was 7 years old when she had his remains returned to Jacksonville, Florida for burial at Evergreen Cemetery with other relatives. I have always wanted to know more about what happened to my father and his company, including the circumstances they were found in at the time. It pleased me to find a letter stating that he had been awarded posthumously "The Combat Infantry Badge". I was three years old the last time I saw him, and would like to know as much as I can about their mission and what happened. Best regards, Cynthia Mary Craig Baird. I recently bought the uniform of Sgt. Floyd E. Dunlap. I'm afraid I do not know the regiment or company. All I know is that he was in the infantry (collar disk), won the Combat Infantry Badge and Silver Star, and was in the 83rd Division. If you have any info: mcatc@charter.net Thanks. Posted 1 Feb 04

My father, Lt. George A. Jackson, was in the 331st Infantry, Hq. Co., 2nd Btn. during WW II. He received a Bronze Star and 2 Purple Hearts. I'd love to contact anyone who might have served with my father. He passed away several years ago and I would like to honor him by finding out a little bit more about his service to our country. I know he spoke of a Sgt. Brown and another fellow named "Smitty". Perhaps they or some of their families may see this and know of my father. Thanks, Ken Jackson, e-mail: muski@nnex.net Posted 23 Jan 04

The show includes lectures presented throughout the day by World War II veterans. There is also an 83rd Division tent, with usually 10 or more 83rd vets in attendance. Posted 11 Jan 04
